Después, se acostó encima de su camastro y dio comienzo a llorar desconsolado, al mismo tiempo que temblando todo él, se quejaba con palabras deshilbanadas y tartamudeantes, después se levantó con la velocidad de un relámpago, y comenzó a envestir puñando con su cabeza contra la puerta, que estaba forrada por la parte de dentro con chapas de hierro, le cogimos con rapidez consolándole como mejor supimos, a la sazón que le aconsejábamos que no hiciera cosas que le harían daño, pero él forcejeando por escaparse de entre nosotros, decía que quería morirse, y que no descansaría hasta asesinar su miserable vida. Le llevamos así cogido por el ronzal como pollino que era, hasta el final de la celda, donde como a dos metros del suelo, había un enorme ventanal enrejado con fuertes hierros, cuando me subí encima del camastro para amarrar la cuerda en las rejas con miras de ahorcarlo en broma, el pobre paisano plantó sus rodillas en el suelo, y llorando desconsoladamente como un niño desamparado, plagado de un tenebroso miedo que por todo su cuerpo se alumbraba, nos dijo suplicante que él no quería morir, que no tenía trabajo, ni casa, ni a nadie, que lo que hubiera hecho había sido nada más que para que le metiesen en la cárcel, así era que entre la cárcel y los papeleos de jueces y de médicos de locos, se pasaba los inviernos resguardado en casa sin gotera, camastro seco y comida gratis, hasta que llegase el buen tiempo, y que esto mismo ya lo hubiera hecho varias veces en otras ciudades de la Patria, donde le habían proporcionado un estupendo resultado. —El caso fue, que todos nos pusimos muy alegres, y hasta el mismo paisano sonriente, se quitó de su cuello el dogal, que fue desaparejando los cinturones en el mismo suceder que nos los daba, y después como si no hubiese pasado nada, nos preguntó si teníamos algo de comer, pues estaba muerto de hambre, entonces el cocinero muy rápido, le puso la perola de judías entre sus piernas, en el suceder que le daba un trozo de pan y una cuchara, le dijo, que comiese judías hasta que se hartara. —El paisano atenazado por el hambre, se sentó encima del camastro con el perol bien terciado entre sus piernas y comenzó a embutirse grandes cucharadas de judías, no encontrándolas al parecer nada saladas, y sin hablar con nadie palabra, dejó al perol sin nada del potaje, después se bebió tras descomunal hartura, un grande jarro de agua del cano del retrete, y seguidamente se enroscó en su catre, con todas sus ropas puestas mojadas como estaban, y tapándose con una manta que era lo mismo que un saco sucio y malo, comenzó con la cabeza también tapada, a buscar el descanso en el sueño. —No debía de encontrarse muy bien en su sitio, pues no hacía nada más que dar vueltas, así como resoplar incomodado debajo de aquella cerda manta, mientras que el desvencijado catre continuamente se movía, dentro de un chirriar de hierros viejos y herrumbrosos, y después de dar muchísimas vueltas, de encogerse y estirarse, y hacer resoplinos y saltos, comenzó a quejarse, primero muy quedamente, después con más fuerza, y por último se levantó del camastro muy encogido y con sus manos apretando desesperado el estómago, que debía de tenerle muy lleno, por la causa del enorme perol de judías que en él no cabían, y no querían salirse ni por encima ni por debajo, por esto el pobre paisano estaba que explotaba, según mí parecer y el de todos mis compañeros, que primero lo tomamos en risas, y algunos graciosos le lanzaban sátiras, y muchas de ellas eran tan picarescas y ocurrentes, que más gracia y regocijo nos hacían, el desdichado paisano que no hacía nada más que dar vueltas por la celda, con las manos atajando su barriga y quejándose a grandes voces, debía de estar lleno de terror pensando, que se encontraba dentro de la misma oficina del mismo diablo, al observar como todos nosotros muy contentos y gozosos, nos estabamos riendo sin hacerle el menor caso. Dejose caer entonces en el suelo, lanzando gritos muy fuertes y arrollicándose a la par que decía que se moría, y que por el amor del Hacedor llamáramos a un médico. —No me hizo falta a mí llamar al funcionario, pues con tal enloquecido escándalo vino él presto armado con un látigo en la mano, para acariciarle el lomo, nada más que abrió la puerta don Manuel rabiado y con mala leche, cogió al pobre paisano que estaba tirado en el suelo dando voces lastimosas dentro de endemoniados revolcones de dolor, primeramente le sacudió con fuerza, pues tal parecía entre sus manos como un muñeco de trapo, le ordenó que dejase de dar más voces sino quería darlas por algo, pero el paisano no atendía a mas palabras que las que le alumbraban sus propios dolores, que no eran otras que el decir que se moría sino llamaban con rapidez a un médico. —Don Manuel comprendió que no era la borrachera la que lo ataba en aquel estado, cuando nosotros le dijimos que se hubo comido todo el perol de judías. Así fue, que tirándole de mala manera encima de su camastro, le dijo que era un indeseable de la peor calaña, y que si por él fuese, allí mismo se moriría como un perro. —Volvió a cerrar la puerta don Manuel, alejándose de nosotros sin decir más palabras, y como a un tiempo de una hora más o menos, llegaron con una camilla dos hombres de la Cruz Roja y se lo llevaron.
